Easy Air Fryer Halloumi Recipe
Golden and crispy Air Fryer Halloumi is super easy to make and ready in 10 minutes! With just 5 ingredients and no extra breadcrumbs or flour, this no-fuss gluten-free Air Fryer recipe is perfect as a snack or to share.

Why You’ll Love This Halloumi Recipe
- Rich, tangy, salty, and flavorful.
- Super easy to make – just season the halloumi, brush with olive oil and herbs, and then air fry.
- No flour – unlike Mozzarella Sticks, there’s no need to coat the halloumi in all-purpose flour, almond flour, or panko breadcrumbs, making it that much more simple.
- This is the perfect cheese for a snack, side dish, or appetizer.
- High in protein and calcium which are both great for your bone health.
- Much easier than pan-frying or grilling. You really don’t have to watch it at all while it cooks!
- Naturally vegetarian, keto and low-carb friendly, gluten free, egg free, nut free, and soy free.
Ingredient Notes
Halloumi: Halloumi is a cheese from Cyprus, usually made from sheep’s milk or goat’s milk, but it can also be made from cow’s milk. This semi-hard cheese has a texture that is described as “squeaky” because it squeaks a little when you bite into it, which really just adds to the fun! One unique point, and why it works so well in an air fryer, is its high melting point. You can even throw this cheese on the grill and it won’t melt. Halloumi is one of the easiest cheeses to make if you’re a fan of experimenting at home. A point to note: not all halloumi is vegetarian. Check your packaging for vegetarian or microbial rennet if needed. My favorite vegetarian halloumi cheese is made by Dodoni.
Olive oil: A classic ingredient in just about every Greek recipe, extra virgin olive oil is a must! It keeps the halloumi from sticking to the air fryer and makes the outside perfectly crispy and golden. You could also use another neutral-tasting healthy oil like avocado oil or regular olive oil instead of extra virgin.
Seasoning: To really pack in a ton of flavor, I added some Italian seasoning and garlic powder. The herbs complement the cheese so well and, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love cheesy garlic? You could substitute the Italian seasoning for oregano (a common herb in Greece) if desired.
Lemon juice: Lemon cuts the richness of the Air Fryer Halloumi, for the perfect balance in every bite. I always prefer fresh, however, bottled works just as well. Lime juice could also be used in a pinch.
How to Air Fry Halloumi
- Carefully open the package of halloumi and slice the cheese into 8 slices about 1/2″ thick.
- In a small bowl, stir together the olive oil, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder until well combined.
- Generously brush the halloumi slices with the seasoned oil, ensuring they are evenly coated.
- Arrange the halloumi in a single layer inside the air fryer basket.
- Cook at 380°F for about 10 minutes, or until the slices turn golden and crisp.
- After air frying, drizzle or brush with lemon juice, then serve and enjoy!
Serving Ideas
Air-fried halloumi tastes incredible on its own, but here are some suggestions to make it a meal or just spruce it up a bit:
- Dips & sauces! You can absolutely treat Halloumi just like fries. Here are some great sauce options to serve with this salty cheese:
- Drizzled with a little raw honey or hot honey (delish!)
- Tzatziki
- Garlic Aioli
- Jalapeño Hot Sauce
- Algerian Sauce
- With a salad like this Halloumi Salad or Mediterranean Cucumber Salad.
- Wrapped in a tortilla or pita with veggies, Tzatziki, and fries to make vegetarian gyros.
- Halloumi is delicious with a side of roasted vegetables. My favorites are sweet potatoes, cherry tomatoes, zucchini, cabbage, and kale.
Storing and Reheating
Store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat the halloumi in the air fryer or on a baking tray in the oven until piping hot. I wouldn’t recommend microwaving the cheese as it can become rubbery.
Expert Tips
Slice the halloumi into thinner strips to make Air Fryer Halloumi Fries!
Try different seasonings and herbs such as black pepper, za’atar, smoked paprika, baharat, cajun seasoning, adobo, taco seasoning, rosemary, or mint.
