Cooking is like a world-sized blank canvas, and everyone has the freedom to add their own touch to it. A simple variation on a dish can draw a Michelin-star-sized line between it and ordinariness.

Take truffle fries, for example. We’ve all grown to know french fries as a delicious side dish. But truffle fries are another story. They’re a sophisticated version of the beloved dish, drizzled with truffle oil and complemented with freshly grated parmesan cheese. And the best part? They’re insanely easy to make.

Today, I’ll give you my flavorsome parmesan truffle fries recipe. You can make it for a family dinner, and it won’t take you more than an hour to finish. So, without further ado, let’s jump in!

Ingredients

Luckily for you, the ingredients for my parmesan truffle fries recipe are pretty simple, and most of them are probably already sitting in your pantry. Here’s a list of the ingredients you’ll need:

  • Two pounds of potatoes
  • Two tablespoons of natural truffle oil
  • One tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil
  • One teaspoon of sea salt flakes
  • 1/2 a teaspoon of pepper
  • Parmesan cheese to taste
  • Fresh parsley to taste

You can use white truffle oil or black truffle oil for this recipe. I like to use white truffle oil because it doesn’t mask the taste of the other ingredients. Black truffle oil is too strong and flavorsome for my taste. Also, you might not find natural truffle oils at your everyday grocery store. So either buy it from an online store or look in a high-end grocery store.

Now, it’s time to cook a restaurant-worthy side dish. Here are the steps you should follow to make truffle fries.

1. Preheat the Oven

Before touching the potatoes, you should preheat the oven so that it’ll be ready to cook your delicious plate. Ideally, you should preheat it to 450-475 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Cut and Prepare the Potatoes

After preheating the oven, you should start cleaning the potatoes. First, wash them thoroughly with cold water and make sure there aren’t traces of dust or dirt on them. This is especially important if you don’t plan on peeling the potatoes. I leave them unpeeled to give the plate an aesthetically-pleasing look, but you’re free to choose.

Then, cut your potatoes into partially thick slices. They shouldn’t be too thin because you want them to soak in the flavors, and cutting them too thick will lead to a longer cooking time in the oven. Also, don’t worry too much about them being even.

After cutting your potatoes, rinse them with cool water to wash off the starch. This step is essential because if you miss it, you’ll end up with clumped and unattractive potatoes.

Dab your potato slices with dry tissues to remove any excess water. Then, put them in a large bowl and add the olive oil, fresh parsley, sea salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly till the potatoes are well-seasoned.

3. Bake the Potatoes

You’ll need baking sheets and parchment paper for this step. First, line the baking sheet with paper, and spread the potatoes on it. An important piece of advice here is to never put more than one layer of potatoes on a sheet. Doing so will lead to uneven cooking and browning. If your baking sheet isn’t large enough to take all the potatoes, use another one.

Push the potatoes into the oven and wait for 15-20 minutes. Then, flip all the potatoes to the other side to ensure they turn golden brown on the two sides. Leave them inside for another 20 minutes.

On a side note, you should check your potatoes after ten minutes because they might cook faster if they’re cut thin.

4. Serve the Potatoes

Now, it’s time to add truffle oil and parmesan cheese. With your potatoes still on the parchment paper, drizzle them with a tablespoon of truffle oil.

You might be tempted to add more than that, but believe me, a little truffle oil goes a long way. The truffle flavor is pretty overpowering, especially if it’s natural. You can add a few more drops if you’re using synthetic truffle oil. But in all honesty, synthetic oils aren’t as delicious as natural ones.

Now, sprinkle your truffle fries with parmesan cheese to taste. As a final touch, add some more parsley on top of the fries. You can also use other fresh herbs if you want.

Toss your homemade truffle fries in the parchment paper till they’re seasoned equally. Then, put them on a large plate, add a few sea salt flakes on top for aesthetic purposes, and serve.

How to Make Fried Parmesan Truffle Fries

A delicious alternative to baked parmesan truffle fries is to fry them in oil instead. While this dish is much less healthy than the previous one, it’s worth a try.

To make fried truffle fries, put them in a deep fryer filled with hot oil at 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Leave them to fry for about three minutes, then pull the fryer out of the oil and shake it to get rid of any excess oil.

Take truffle fries, for example. We've all grown to know french fries as a delicious side dish. But truffle fries are another story. They're a sophisticated version of the beloved dish, drizzled with truffle oil and complemented with freshly grated parmesan cheese. And the best part? They're insanely easy to make.

Put them aside till it’s time for dinner. Then, heat the oil on 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Cook the fries in the oil for about five minutes till they gain a golden brown color, and take them out.

Then, drizzle the truffle oil and sprinkle the grated parmesan cheese, and you’re good to go.

Tips and Tricks

To make the best truffle fries plate out there, you can follow some of these tips and tricks.

For starters, I like to use Idaho russet potatoes for homemade fries because they’re fleshy and suitable for both baking and frying.

More so, if you have enough time, I recommend soaking your fries in cold water for about 30 minutes before cooking them. Doing so will reduce starch and give you fresh-tasting fries. Of course, you can also follow this step if you’re making homemade french fries.

It’s always best if you cook truffle fries right before serving them. They don’t last fresh for long, and after a while, they’ll soften, and the truffle flavor will fade. If you wait too long before eating them, you should ideally reheat them in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for ten minutes. Then, take them out and drizzle a few more drops of truffle oil on top.

A final tip you’ll appreciate if you love an extra crunch in your food is to keep your fries as far apart as possible on the baking sheet. Doing so will lead to better airflow in the oven between the potato slices, which will give you extra crispy fries.

On the other hand, piling them carelessly on the sheet will give you fries that taste more steamed than crispy.
