Before diving into some of the most common conversions and systems of measurement, let’s get a few of the facts straight.

What is a quart?

A quart (qt) is a unit of liquid measurement, also known as a unit of volume. We are referring to the us fluid quart, also known as the us liquid quart. You’ll often hear this when people are referring to getting a “quart of milk,” or you’ll see it written out on containers at the supermarket that are storing liquid, too. There is such a thing as “dry quarts” in the United States, but they are very less commonly used.

What is an ounce?

Ounces are teeny tiny units of measurement. Ounces can be used when talking about liquids (fl oz) and solids, so you’ll actually see and hear this term frequently. (It’s also used to talk about weight, too! Babies are often 7 lbs, 6 ounces, etc.) Using ounces as part of the measurement system is a great way to get as close to the weight as possible. Because when we’re converting a recipe, we don’t want to ever just “round up” and guess. If making a cake calls for 7 ounces of liquid, then it’s written that way for a reason and is to be followed precisely. One fluid ounce equals two tablespoons or 6 teaspoons. They are a standard unit of measurement in the United States.
