A Note From Kristen

This recipe took a little experimenting to get just right because air fryer apple chips can go from perfectly crisp to overdone surprisingly quickly. Keeping the temperature low and flipping the apples a few times during cooking gave me the best results. Don’t worry if they seem slightly soft when you first take them out. They continue to crisp up as they cool. Happy snacking!

What are the best apples to use for air fryer apple chips?

I usually reach for Granny Smith apples when making air fryer apple chips because they’re firm, crisp, and have a bright tart flavor that becomes even more concentrated as they cook. Their sturdy texture also helps them hold up well during air frying.

That said, you can make delicious homemade apple chips with several varieties. Honeycrisp, Fuji, Gala, Pink Lady, and Golden Delicious all work well, each offering a slightly different balance of sweetness and tartness. Whichever apples you choose, look for ones that are fresh, firm, and crisp. Softer apples tend to produce less crispy apple chips.

What’s the best way to slice apples for apple chips?

For crispy air fryer apple chips, slice the apples as thinly and evenly as possible. I recommend using a mandoline if you have one, as it makes it easy to get consistent slices that cook at the same rate.

If you don’t have a mandoline, a sharp knife works well too. Just aim for thin, uniform slices so some chips don’t finish cooking before the others.

How to Store Air Fryer Apple Chips

Allow the apple chips to cool completely before storing them. They continue to crisp up as they cool, so don’t be surprised if they seem slightly soft when they first come out of the air fryer.

Store the cooled apple chips in an airtight container at room temperature, away from heat and humidity. When kept dry, they’ll stay crisp for up to 1 week.

If the apple chips lose some of their crunch, simply pop them back into the air fryer at 325°F for 2 to 3 minutes, then let them cool again until crisp.

My Favorite Flavor Variations

  • Apple pie spice: Swap the cinnamon for apple pie spice or pumpkin pie spice.
  • Warm spices: Add a pinch of nutmeg, ground ginger, cardamom, allspice, or cloves.
  • Naturally sweet: Skip the sugar and let the apples’ natural sweetness stand on its own.
  • Savory: Season with a pinch of rosemary, thyme, sage, or chili powder for a sweet-and-savory variation.

Method

  1. Preheat air fryer to 325°F if necessary for your model.
  2. In a large mixing bowl add the apple slices, cinnamon and sugar (if using). Toss to coat.
  3. Place the coated apple slices in one even layer in your air fryer basket, working in batches if necessary.
  4. Air fry at 325°F for 15 minutes, giving the basket a shake or the apple chips a flip every 5 minutes or so, to ensure even cooking.
  5. The apple chips are ready when turning golden on the edges and are firm to touch. The apple chips will continue to crisp up as they cool.
  6. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

You can keep the skin on the apples for ultimate crispness and nutrition, but if you prefer to remove the skins, you can do that as well.
Coring the apples is optional as well. The seeds fall out easily if left un-cored, so it isn’t a necessary step. But if you prefer to, it will not hurt!
