Snacking on air fryer frozen french fries has never been so easy! With my recipe, you can easily turn frozen fries from ice cold to crispy, piping hot, and ready to eat in less than 20 minutes. I’m sure many of you will agree that cooking them in the air fryer is definitely one of the best ways to enjoy homemade fries.

Why You’ll Love It

  • It’s one of the most popular snacks ever. Even the pickiest of eaters will easily fall in love with them.
  • Making air fryer fries is so easy. You just place the frozen fries in the air fryer, toss them with salt and a bit of oil, and leave them to cook. The air fryer will do all the hard work.
  • Air frying french fries instead of deep frying them is way healthier. You’ll save up on calories since the fries won’t be soaking all that oil in, and you won’t be consuming that, too. So, if you’re looking to cut back on calories but love snacking on fries, this is the perfect way to make them.
  • Customize air fryer french fries however you want to suit your preferences. Sprinkle with your favorite spices, seasonings, or toppings as soon as the fries are cooked to make them taste more amazing. I personally like them with salt and pepper!
  • Enjoy these fries as a tasty snack any time of the day, or serve them as an easy side dish during meal times. You’ll find that there’s always room on the table for deliciously crispy, freshly cooked fries.
  • This air fryer recipe works with different types of fries, although you’ll need to adjust the cooking time depending on what you’re using. The thicker the fries, the longer the cooking time.

Types of Frozen French Fries

There are several types of frozen french fries that you can buy in the market. These are:

  • Shoestring Fries: These are the typical fries you’ll often see served in fast food chains and restaurants. They are thinly sliced potato strips.
  • Curly Fries: These spiral fries look adorable! They’re made with a specialized tool called a curly fry cutter or spiralizer to give them their shape.
  • Waffle Fries: Also known as crinkle-cut fries, these have a distinct waffle shape with ridges, grooves, and holes.
  • Potato Wedges: These come in thick potato cuts. Unlike the others on this list, you’ll find that potato wedges often still have their skins on!

Seasoning Options

  • Mix and match your favorite spices or seasonings to make your fries even more savory and delectable. Pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, or chili powder all work great to give your fries more depth and complex flavors. My homemade adobo seasoning works great on fries too!
  • Some packages of frozen fries already come with seasoning. I’m partial to prepackaged rosemary-seasoned fries. If those are what you have on hand, feel free to skip adding the salt before cooking the fries since the seasonings may have enough salt content anyway.

Tips for the Best Fries

  • Preheat the air fryer for a few minutes before putting the fries in. While not entirely necessary, this can ensure the crispiest bite.
  • Don’t overcrowd your air fryer basket. Cooking too many fries at once can leave you with soggy, undercooked fries at the bottom layer. If you’re cooking more than 1 pound of frozen fries at a time, do it in batches. This way, you’ll end up with golden crispy fries every time.
  • Shake the fries several times throughout their cooking time. You want them to move around a bit to ensure they’ll be crispy and cooked evenly.
  • Adjust your cooking time based on the type of fry you’re using. For example, the thicker waffle fries may take a few minutes longer than the thinner shoestring fries.
  • The best way to check if your fries are done is to sample it! Take a fry and taste it. If it’s golden brown and crispy on the outside while tender on the inside, then it means it’s good to go.
  • Don’t throw out any leftovers. Place them in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator. The next day, reheat them in the air fryer to make them crispy again.
  • Use frozen fries for as long as they are good and stored properly in your freezer. If you notice any discolorations or dry spots, they might affect the taste and texture of your fries if you choose to cook them, so it’s best to stick to those without any signs of freezer burn.

How to Serve Air Fryer Frozen French Fries

  • Pair them with your favorite dips and sauces, and you’ve got a snack that’s just as good as those you buy from fast food chains or restaurants. Ketchup, ranch dressing, mayo, cheese sauce, fry sauce, BBQ sauce, and hot sauce are just some of the ones I love using. But if you’re up for a challenge, make your fries even more special by pairing them with homemade dipping sauces like garlic aioli, sriracha aioli, or honey sriracha sauce
  • Go wild with toppings and enjoy loaded french fries! Drizzle some melted cheese and BBQ sauce on top, or experiment and add corn salsa, beans, herbs, pickled onions, and sour cream instead for a delicious Mexican-inspired twist that you can enjoy at home.
  • A basket of fries is amazing to pair with delicious Vegan sandwiches or various vegetarian casserole recipes that even meat lovers will enjoy.
  • Have you tried dipping fries in ice cream? This might make you pause a little, but it’s a surprisingly terrific and underrated combination!

Some varieties of frozen french fries come salted and/or with seasoning and if this is the case, omit the salt in this recipe.
If you prefer to use an oil spray over regular oil, that works! Simply give a short spray, then toss to coat.
