Ingredient Notes

Please note that this is just an overview — please visit the full recipe for the amounts and instructions.

Toasted Sesame Oil: Adds a rich aroma and nutty depth to the vegetable filling. Stick with the toasted variety vs regular sesame oil for the best results.

Garlic Cloves: Enhances the savory flavors of this dish. If you do not have fresh garlic, use half a teaspoon of garlic powder instead.

Green Onions: Imparts a mildly sharp, fresh flavor.

Cabbage: Adds volume, mild sweetness, and hearty texture to the veggie filling.

Carrots: Provide subtle sweetness and a slight crunch to the dish.

SPECIAL NOTE: My favorite hack for this recipe is using pre-packaged coleslaw mix instead of shredding cabbage and carrots myself or buying them separately.

Soy Sauce: Adds saltiness and a savory umami flavor to the dumplings. You can also use tamari sauce or coconut aminos. If gluten-free, make sure the soy or tamari is marked as such.

Black Pepper: Help give the dish a more complex flavor profile.

Red Chili Flakes: Imparts a nice, subtle heat to the dumplings.

Rice Paper Sheets: Provides the structure needed to hold and encase the filling. They have a neutral taste, making the filling’s flavor shine.
Cooking Spray or Oil: Helps crisp up the rice paper wraps. I prefer using avocado oil.

Expert Tips

  • Double wrapping is recommended if you prefer your dumplings to have a thicker wrapper.
  • Don’t overcook the vegetables, as they might make the dumplings soggy.
  • Serve the dish immediately after cooking, as it may lose its crispiness (and freshness!) over time.

  • More Veggies: Zucchini, mushrooms, bell peppers, sweet corn, spring onion, or kale make great additions to this recipe.
  • Tofu Things Up: Add crumbled, pressed, or firm tofu for a protein boost.
  • More Flavor: Add freshly grated ginger, a squeeze of lime juice, or chopped fresh coriander to the filling.
  • Spicy Kick: Increase the amount of chili flakes, add chopped jalapenos, or drizzle chili oil on top of the dumplings.

Storing and Reheating

Store any leftover dumplings in an airtight container with parchment paper to prevent them from sticking. Keep them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

To reheat, air fry the leftovers until they’re hot and crispy. Don’t microwave them (it will make the rice paper soggy!).

Alternatively, you can reheat them in an oiled skillet over medium heat until warm and crisp again.

  1. I’m wondering if this could be done in an oven, and if so how would you do it? I’m not familiar with how air fryer recipes translate to oven baking. But I really like the idea of using rice wrappers for dumplings.

    1. Hi, Melanie! Thank you for visiting. This same recipe can most certainly be cooked in the oven (stovetop too!). For the oven, after you roll them up, you can place them on a parchment paper-lined baked sheet, brush or spray with a little oil and then bake in the oven at 400F for 15-20 minutes (or until crispy and golden). Alternatively, you can also place them in an oiled skillet over medium heat and pan-fry for approximately 2-3 minutes each side. I hope this helps! And I hope you enjoy the recipe. 🙂
