A Note From Kristen

This avocado spread is my go-to for perfect avocado toast. It’s quick to make, packed with flavor, and made with simple, natural ingredients. There are no preservatives or additives like you might find in store-bought versions. I use it on everything from toast to sandwiches, and it never disappoints. Here’s exactly how I make it at home. Enjoy!

Ingredient Notes

Please keep in mind that this is just a quick overview. Visit the full recipe for amounts and instructions!

  • Ripe Avocados: Acts as the base ingredient of the spread, giving it a rich, creamy texture with a mild, buttery flavor. Avocados are the best since they offer healthy fats and potassium while being naturally low in saturated fat and carbohydrates and have zero cholesterol!
  • Whole Cumin Seeds: Add a bit of crunch and a warm, slightly nutty flavor. You can also use ground cumin for this recipe, but the final result won’t be quite as smoky.
  • Ground Coriander: Gives the spread a subtle citrusy flavor to brighten it up.
  • Orange Juice: Provides acidity and a burst of sweetness to balance the richness of the avocado. If you want a brighter, more citrus-forward taste, you can add lemon juice instead. But orange really is my secret ingredient!
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Helps smooth the avocado spread and make it more luscious.
  • Salt: Enhances the natural flavors of the other ingredients.
  • Ground Black Pepper: Gives the spread a very mild kick and some sharpness.
  • Red Pepper Flakes: Adds gentle heat without being too overpowering.
  • Orange Zest: optional; it heightens the juice’s citrus notes that help lift the whole spread.

How to Make Avocado Spread

01

If using cumin seeds, toast them in a dry skillet over medium heat for 1–2 minutes until fragrant, then set aside. Meanwhile, mash the avocados to your desired consistency in a bowl.

Serving Ideas

  • Create avocado toast using sandwich or sourdough bread.
  • Sprinkle some bagel seasoning and serve as a spread on pita bread.
  • Use as a dip for fresh veggies like bell peppers, carrot sticks, and snap peas.
  • Stuff into a wrap with fresh veggies and tahini sauce.
  • Spread over baked sweet potato slices.
  • Serve as a dip alongside tortilla chips (in place of guacamole!).

Expert Tips
  • Use ripe but firm avocados for this recipe, and you’ll end up with a creamy, not watery, spread.
  • If the spread ends up too thin for your liking, mash more ripe avocado flesh and fold it into the mixture.
  • I like to mash the avocados with a fork or potato masher instead of pureeing them in a food processor or blender. This way, the fruit chunks will remain in the spread and it doesn’t become too thin.
  • If you like the avocado spread to have more kick, add diced fresh jalapeño or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • Variations you can try include:
    • Add lime juice, garlic, and chopped cilantro for a Mexican-inspired twist.
    • Add smoked paprika and roasted peppers for a smokier, deeper spread.
    • For an herb-heavy avocado spread, stir in fresh herbs like chopped parsley and mint.

Notes

Storage
Keep the leftovers in an airtight container, preferably a small one, so there’s less exposure to air, which causes browning. Press a piece of plastic wrap at the very top of the spread to help slow down oxidation even more. For extra protection, drizzle a thin layer of olive oil at the top before sealing.
Keep the container in the refrigerator and consume within 3 days.
