What is Cajun Seasoning?

It’s a blend of herbs and spices, with Acadian roots, that gives dishes earthy, bold, and spicy flavors, enhancing their taste and making them more enjoyable.

Recipes tend to vary, but common ingredients in Cajun seasoning typically include paprika, cayenne pepper, onion powder, and garlic. This blend is often used in Cajun and Creole dishes such as red beans and rice, maque choux, and okra gumbo.

Smoked Paprika: Provides a smoky depth and enhances the complexity of the seasoning.

Garlic Powder: Adds an umami flavor that helps dishes taste more savory and well-rounded.

Onion Powder: Imparts a subtle sweetness that balances the smokiness and spiciness of the other ingredients.

Dried Oregano: Gives the seasoning an earthy, herbaceous flavor and aromatic depth.

Dried Thyme: A staple herb in Cajun cuisine, it provides a slightly minty and earthy flavor.

Ground Black Pepper: Adds a sharp, pungent heat and slightly woody taste.

Cayenne Pepper: Adds a bold, spicy kick. You can adjust the amount you add to suit your personal heat preferences.

Salt: Enhances the natural taste of the other ingredients.

White Pepper: Optional; it adds extra depth to this Cajun seasoning.

Notes

Storage

Keep the seasoning in a sealed, airtight container to protect it from air exposure and moisture. Then, store it in a cool, dry place away from heat sources or direct sunlight. It’ll be good for up to six months.
Since seasonings tend to lose potency over time, it’s best to make smaller quantities than big batches. That way, you’ll always have the freshest Cajun seasoning when needed!
