Why You’ll Love This Easy Recipe

  • It’s so easy to whip up.
  • Potatoes are highly nutritious. By including them in your meals, you get a load of vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates
  • Baking uses significantly less oil than deep-frying your potatoes. Also, it produces less calories and fat!
  • It’s easily customizable! You can flavor these fries with your own seasoning blend and control their sodium content.
  • There’s also easier clean-up afterward since you won’t need to deal with greasy pans and countertops.
  • Gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, nut-free, vegan, and vegetarian.

Ingredient Notes

  • Potatoes – The star of this recipe! I like to use Russet potatoes, but any medium-sized potato will do. Idaho and Yukon golds work great here. Also, I like to keep the skins on as I bake them for the added nutrition and texture. But if you prefer to peel the potatoes, go right ahead!
  • Oil – Helps make the fries crispy and ensures a more even cooking as they bake in the oven. I like using avocado oil, but olive oil (or even extra-virgin olive oil) works too!
  • Garlic powder – Gives the fries a nice garlicky flavor.
  • Salt – Provides a salty taste to the fries.
  • Smoked Paprika – Gives a slightly smoky and spicy flavor to the fries.
  • Ground Black Pepper – Adds a bit of heat to the potatoes.

How to Cut Potatoes into French Fries

If you prefer using fresh potatoes instead of buying pre-cut frozen fries, here’s how you can cut them on your own without using a French Fry cutter:

  1. Thoroughly wash your potatoes. If you’d like, you can also peel them.
  2. Place a potato on its side on top of a cutting board.
  3. Cut a slice on one side of the potato using a chef’s knife to give it a flat surface.
  4. Cut the potato into thin slices, with the width as thick as you want your fries to be.
  5. Stack the slices on each other, then cut them into strips.
  6. (Optional) Soak the cut fries in cold water for several minutes before baking them. This will help remove excess starch and give you crispier fries.

Tasty Seasoning Variations

Here are the different ways to season your fries:

  • Basic sea salt and pepper combination.
  • Chili powder and lime zest, or even a Tajin seasoning blend.
  • Garlic powder and parsley.
  • Dried basil and oregano.
  • Parmesan cheese (rennet-free if necessary!) and garlic.
  • Melted cheddar cheese and minced chives.
  • Store-bought fry seasoning.

Storing Homemade French Fries

Store any leftover fries inside an airtight container in the fridge, where they’ll be good for up to 3 days.

Alternatively, you can freeze the fries solid on parchment paper in the freezer and then transfer them to an airtight container. Stored this way, they’ll be good for up to 3 months.

How to Make Your Fries Crispy Again

  1. Preheat oven to 400℉ or your air-fryer to 350°F for 3-4 minutes.
  2. Place fries on top of a baking sheet/air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding to ensure a more even reheating.
  3. Spray or drizzle some oil on top to help crisp them up.
  4. Place the baking sheet/air fryer basket in the oven/air fryer and bake the fries for about 8 to 10 minutes.
  5. Continue heating in 1-2 minute increments if they still have not met your desired crispiness.
  6. Once the fries are gold and crispy, remove them from the oven and enjoy.
