A Note From Kristen

I love using tahini sauce when I want to add an earthy, rich flavor to everyday dishes. This easy tahini sauce comes together quickly by hand, no blender or food processor required, and turns out smooth and creamy every time. I use it most often with grains and fresh vegetables, but it works just as well with heartier dishes too. It’s one of my go-to sauces when I want something flavorful without a lot of prep. I hope you enjoy!

What is Tahini Sauce?

Tahini sauce is a smooth, creamy sauce made from tahini, a paste made by grinding sesame seeds. It has a rich, nutty flavor with a subtle bitterness that sets it apart from many other sauces.

Tahini-based sauces are most closely associated with Middle Eastern cuisine, where they’re commonly used in savory dishes, dips, and dressings. Today, tahini is also used more broadly across many global cuisines as a versatile base for sauces and spreads.

Labeled ingredients for Tahini sauce are arranged on a light surface, including cumin, water, salt, tahini, vinegar, lemon juice, maple syrup, and garlic.
Tahini, cumin, salt, vinegar, lemon juice, maple syrup, garlic and water make the best tahini sauce.
  • Tahini: The key ingredient that forms the base of the sauce, giving it body, richness, and a deep, nutty flavor. Use plain, well-stirred tahini paste made only from roasted sesame seeds, not flavored tahini or tahini sauce.
  • Garlic Clove: Adds sharpness to the sauce and boosts the overall garlic flavor, keeping the flavor lively.
  • Warm Water: Helps the tahini dressing loosen into a smooth sauce, so the ingredients blend more evenly, resulting in a creamy consistency.
  • Lemon Juice: Brings brightness and acidity to help balance the flavors. You can use fresh or bottled lemon juice for this recipe.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Adds depth and a gentle tang.
  • Maple Syrup: Provides sweetness that helps soften the sharper notes in the sauce.
  • Salt: Enhances the natural flavors of the ingredients. Start with a pinch and adjust to taste.
  • Ground Cumin: Adds warmth and earthiness to the tahini sauce, making it more complex.

Kristen’s Top Tips

  • Use a good quality tahini paste for the best flavor.
  • Use warm water instead of cold so the tahini emulsifies more easily.
  • For best results, let the sauce rest for a bit before serving. This allows the flavors to settle and blend.
  • Want more flavor variations? Swap in roasted garlic cloves or garlic powder, sweeten with a little honey, or add smoked paprika or black pepper. You can also stir in fresh green herbs like parsley, cilantro, mint, or dill, or finish with a drizzle of harissa.
