Ingredient Notes

Please keep in mind that this is just a quick overview. Visit the full recipe for amounts and instructions!

  • Chickpeas: Also known as garbanzo beans. The mild-flavored star ingredient that gives this green goddess hummus its protein-packed creaminess, along with carbohydrates, fiber, potassium, and calcium!
  • Tahini: Adds more creaminess, depth, and a slightly nutty, earthy flavor. If you aren’t a tahini fan, simply omit it!
  • Garlic Cloves: Provides a bold, savory kick that boosts the dip’s overall flavor profile.
  • Fresh Lime Juice: Gives this hummus brightness and acidity that balances the richness of the other ingredients. If you do not have lime juice, lemon juice or any kind of vinegar will do the trick.
  • Red Wine Vinegar: Adds tang and complexity that pairs beautifully with the garlic and herbs. If you do not have red wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar makes a great substitute.
  • Fresh Basil: Provides the herbaceous flavor that gives this hummus a uniquely Green Goddess dressing twist.
  • Parsley: Gives a fresh, slightly peppery flavor that keeps the Green Goddess hummus from being too heavy.
  • Fresh Cilantro: Adds a vibrant, clean taste. Even if you aren’t a cilantro fan, you might just like it in this hummus – it isn’t overpowering and blends well with the other herbs.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Rounds out the flavors and makes the dip luxurious and silky in consistency.
  • Salt: Enhances the natural flavors of the ingredients.
  • Cold Water: Helps loosen the dip’s consistency.
  • Fresh Lime Zest: Optional, for garnish. It adds extra brightness and aroma.
  • Green Onion: Optional, for garnish. Adds a crunchy bite with a mild onion flavor.

Expert Tips

  • For best results, drain the chickpeas but do not rinse them. The tiniest bit of aquafaba (chickpea liquid) left behind coating the chickpeas helps increase the creaminess of this dip.
  • Blend and taste as you go, particularly with the fresh herbs and salt. Using too much of one ingredient might overpower the others.
  • To give the creamy dip the best flavor, use tahini made from roasted sesame seeds.
  • Want to experiment with flavors? Here are some things to try with this green hummus recipe:
    • Spicy Kick – add a pinch of cayenne, a fresh serrano chile, or a spoonful of pickled peppers
    • Avocado Flavor – blend in half a ripe avocado.
    • Nutty Goodness – Top the dip with chopped walnuts, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, or a drizzle of cashew butter.
    • Yogurt Swirl – Drizzle in Greek-style or vegan yogurt for a tangier, creamier finish.
    • More Herbs – Swap or add mint or tarragon for a more cooling taste, or chives for sharper flavors.
