Ingredient Notes

Please keep in mind that this is just a quick overview. Visit the full recipe for amounts and instructions!

Tomato Sauce: The base of the taco sauce, which gives it a smooth, rich texture and a naturally sweet, deeply umami flavor. I like to use the simple organic canned variety.

Apple Cider Vinegar: Adds a tangy kick to the homemade taco sauce, helping make it taste more vibrant and well-rounded. If you do not have ACV, red wine vinegar makes a suitable alternative.

Hot Sauce of Choice: Imparts an extra layer of spice and complexity of flavor to your sauce. I love to use a habanero-based hot sauce, but any will work!

Chili Powder: Gives the taco sauce its signature warmth and earthy depth with its blend of spices and dried chiles.

Smoked Paprika: Provides a nice, woodsy flavor and subtle smokiness that helps temper the tanginess of the apple cider vinegar and the sweetness of both tomato sauce and sugar.

Garlic Powder: Gives a garlicky flavor that deepens the overall taste of the taco sauce.

Onion Powder: Imparts a subtle sweetness and mildly oniony flavor that won’t overpower the sauce.

Ground Cumin: Boosts the smokiness and earthy flavors of the sauce.

Salt: Enhances the natural flavors of the other ingredients.

Sugar or Maple Syrup: Acts as the flavor balancer that helps tone down the acidity of the apple cider vinegar and the intensity of the spices. Any sweetener will do!

Black Pepper: Adds extra bite and subtle pungency to the sauce.

Cayenne: Increases the sauce’s heat and spiciness. If you are sensitive to spice, feel free to omit it.

Serving Ideas

Expert Tips

  • If the taco sauce thickens too much, add a splash of water until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • Opt for using a no-salt-added tomato sauce to control the sodium level.
  • To give you complete control of the sauce’s spiciness, start with smaller amounts of the cayenne pepper and hot sauce and add more as needed.
  • Try adding fresh lime juice or oregano for extra depth and richness, sun-dried tomatoes for extra umami flavor, or crank up the spiciness by throwing in red pepper flakes, serrano peppers, fresh jalapeno peppers, ghost peppers, or habanero powder.
